NOAA Ship Tracker Help Page

The starting screen has the following components:

1. Each ship's current location is indicated by a red triangle and the initials for the ship. The initials and the full ship name are listed at the bottom of this page. Historical positions for ships are indicated by green triangles.

2. The cruise tracks for each ship are indicated by a line. The color will vary depending on the background image selected. Click on the Map Information for a more detailed description.

3. Zoom In/Zoom Out - By clicking on the rectangles, the map will zoom in or out. Rectangles closer to the top zoom the map in relatively closer than rectangles near the bottom. The red rectangle indicates the curren zoom level.

4. The Toolbar:

Zoom In - Zoom In Tool: When this tool is selected, use the cursor to zoom in by clicking on th emap or by drawing a box around the area you want to zoom in on.

Zoom Out - Zoom Out Tool: When this tool is selected, use the cursor to zoom out by clicking on the map by drawing a box around the area where you want to zoom out.

Recenter - Recentering Tool: Use this tool to recenter the map by clicking on the point you wish to move to the center of the map.

Information Tool - Information Tool: Click on a ship or cruise to find out the conditions (sea and atmospheric) at that point.

Full Extent Button - Full Extent Tool: Click on this button to go to the full extent of the map.

Help Page - Help Button: Opens the help page.

5. This shows the longitude and latitude of the cursor location.

6. Map Information Button- Click on this to see the more information about the layers displayed on the map.

7. Pick a Ship - Individual ships can be chosen from this menu. The map will zoom to the current cruise of that ship.

8. Timeframe - There are several options for how much historical data to show. The default is the current cruise, which is defined as all of the data since the last 24 hour break in transmission from the ship.

9. Background - Different background images can be chosen from this menu.

10. Current Ship Data - Opens a new window listing the current conditions for each ship.

11. Pan - The arrows on each side of the map can be used to scroll or pan the map north, east, west, or south.

12. To return to the view showing all ships, click on "Show All Ships" in the banner across the top of the page. To view the Google Maps version of Ship Tracker, click on "Google Maps Version" in the banner at the top of the page.

 

Individual ship screens have the following components:

2. The name of the current ship is listed here. Click on the name of the ship to see more information about that ship.

3. Timeframe - The default timeframe for display is the current cruise, which is defined as all data transmissions since the last 24 hour break in transmissions. Data from the last year is available on Ship Tracker.

4. Background - Different background images can be chosen from this menu.

5. Observation Date and Time- Choose the day and time for which you would like to display data.

6. Ship Data - This is where the data collected from the ship is displayed.

7. Current Ship Data - Click on this link to see the most recent data from the ship.
